THE PRESENTATION:

Pick up the financial pages these days, and the names of brand new, billion dollar start-ups literally drip off the page: Uber, Snapchat, Pinterest, Buzzfeed …

What do they all have in common? Intellectual property: patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights. Each of these companies was built, almost entirely, around ideas, protectable by law, without which each would be worthless.

The need for intellectual property protection however, isn’t just for billion dollar behemoths.  Restaurants protect recipes via trade secret, inventors of new types of pacifiers need a patent, clothing designers depend on copyrights or design patents, and every business benefits from a solid trademark.

The problem? It’s all so intimidating.

Where do you start? How much does IP protection cost? When do I need it? Are there stop gap options? What are the dangers of not protecting your IP?

At Patent Plus Partners, our mission is to both encourage and foster entrepreneurialism and to bring intellectual property protection to those who, for one reason or another, haven’t gotten the message: “Yes, you can.” You can start a business; you can build a company around your invention/idea; you can do this.

As such, we’re sponsoring this presentation, in order to de-mystify the whole intellectual property process, to give you an understanding of:

1. What are the critical terms/words intellectual property lawyers use and what do they mean?
2. How do you match your needs (both financially and in relation to your business goals) to a particular intellectual property protection plan. In other words, when should you file a patent versus a trademark or copyright, how much does any of this cost, and what different options are available when money is tight?
and 3. How do you go about taking your newly protected ideas and turning them into a business? In other words, how do you raise money, what sort of business should you start, and where do you start?

When you wake up at night wondering, “Can I do this?”, we want the voice inside you to answer, "Yes I can!”
